Silver Festival 16th April - 1st May 2009
Silver is Southwark's older people's festival. For two weeks, Southwark residents were able to enjoy film screenings, historical talks and walks, bike rides, art workshops, dance and music performances and a whole range of activities across the borough and beyond.
Silver launched on 16 April at the Cottons Centre, Tooley Street. Cllr Eliza Mann - the Mayor of Southwark opened the event and speakers included Gerry Hunt - local Southwark artist, Charlie Cherril - the chair of Southwark Pensioners Centre, and Cllr Lewis Robinson, Executive member for culture, leisure and sport.
A new event for Silver 2009 was Silver Sunday - a family day of arts and crafts workshops, live performances, a college tour and tips on gardening, bike repairs and how to be eco-friendly.
The finale event was Silver Social at the beautiful Rivoli Ballroom where Southwark residents enjoyed performances by Carl Campbell and the Recycled Teenagers and Bollywood Ballroom from Akademi - South East Asian Dance UK. There were additional performances from Silver's very own Come Dancing troupe - the Darwin Dancers and entertainment from the South London based Becky Munday 5 band and DJ Stuart Calder (of Silver Sounds fame). With afternoon tea and cake being served and a licensed bar, it was truly a glamorous event and a perfect way to end Silver 2009.
