About South City Radio

South City Radio is a vibrant community station broadcasting across South East London. It is unique in both its content and approach to community radio, using the medium as a tool for education, entertainment and even democracy.

Over 300 local people have been trained in a wide variety of media skills since SCR was launched (formerly as Radio Peckham). Many of them still contribute to the station bringing you shows such as Nigel's Blues Stuff, All This Jazz and The Primer.

The station has grown hugely, attracting a large local audience, and runs a month-long FM broadcast (RSL) each year. The latest RSL finished in May 2009 with over 100 local people contributing to shows such as Spotlight, where MP Simon Hughes took calls from local people on the recession and places for children in secondary school.

The station holds regular forums and phone-ins with decision-makers, including Harriet Harman MP, Hazel Blears MP, Head of Operations for Southwark Police, Victor Olisa, and Tony McNulty MP. These shows connect everyday people with those that make policy in order to create a better understanding of community need.

South City Radio aims to prove that community radio can produce professional content, with many programmes broadcast on commercial and public service stations including Choice FM and BBC Radio 4. BBC journalist Mark Savage praised our output, saying that it '...surpasses much of the crass commercial radio rubbish out there, and could even give the BBC a run for our money!'
