Arts Express is delighted to announce the opening of the ‘Life in Peckham’ exhibition at Area 10, Peckham Square, at 6.30pm on 14 July, to coincide with the launch of the ‘I Love Peckham Festival’ and a biography of local figure Harold Moody. The exhibition opens to the public on 15 July and is open from 11.00am to 6.00pm daily from then until 20 July.
The exhibition is the culmination of an exciting project involving students from The Harris Academy at Peckham and St Thomas the Apostle School working with four artists - Amanda Egbe, Vik, Heather Martin and Ted Litchfield.
The project focused on four periods of Peckham’s history – 18th Century, 19th Century, 1900 – 1945 and 1945 to the present day - and introduced students to Southwark’s Local History Library and the resources offered by Peckham Society.
Each artist then worked with one period of history and a class from either The Harris Academy at Peckham or St Thomas the Apostle School to produce art work inspired by that time.
Together the artists and students have created a fantastic show which includes a fairground installation inspired by the 18th century, zoetropes inspired by the 19th century, posters inspired by the first half of the 20th century, and a video installation inspired by the present.
